Boycotting Monistat! No more 'Vagi-Face'!

A few weeks back, I received my Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel along with my other drugstore.com goodies. I was ecstatic, and bf thought it was the funniest thing. He taunted me for a good week, calling me 'Vagi-face' and 'Vagi-cream'. I got real tired of explaining to him what we beauty bloggers use it for, LOL.

I know a lot of ladies love this product as a makeup primer, but here's what I think...

It's over-glorified, and overrated!!! The consistency is pretty different from it's 'superior', Smashbox PhotoFinish Primer. First off, Monistat is thicker. Although it does give skin an even, smooth finish, it's also leaves a cakey mask...it reminded me of wax on a fruit. Even after I used oil cleanser and foaming face wash, I still felt like a waxy piece of fruit. NOT GOOD.

C'mon people...it's meant to be rubbed on the shaved bits of your body, NOT an exposed part, like the face! And YEEESSS, it contains dimethicone, the smoothing ingredient, but so do other non bank-breaking primers (like my HG Baby Pink bases). You'd be surprised to find that a lot of primers contain dimethicone and other active ingredients that end in '-cone'.

For the sake of testing out different products, I used this stuff about five times. I'd apply a thin layer first thing in the morning, and by the time I got to work two hours later, the mineral foundation applied around my nose had migrated, and left the skin flakey AND oily at the same time. The bridge of my nose was an oil slick, but the sides of my nostrils were flakey. GROSS!

I also used it at night, before an over-night shift. I few hours into work, I'd check my reflection and my skin was blotchy...like I hadn't worn any foundation at all! What is the point of wearing this stuff as a base if it makes your foundation look uneven?

The final verdict: Monistat powder gel does not work on my combo skin. It makes my concealer appear blotchy immediately after applied, and it makes my skin flake around my nose and chin. Even when I use a teensy bit, it makes my mineral/regular foundation uneven on the drier areas of my face, like my cheeks. I also hate the waxy fruit effect. I'm going to stick to using this stuff for what it's intended for. No more 'Vagi-Face' for Aya!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience :( The only flaw I've experienced with it is flakes, but that's cuz I had applied too much. Also just to be on the safe side, is yours close to it's expiration date? The first Monistat I had I didn't check before I threw the receipt away, but it was only good for another 3 months. Few weeks later I purchased another which had a longer shelf life and it did a better job, less flaky when applied too much. Btw when do you apply it? Before or after your toner/moisturize/fix+ w/e you use to prep your skin? I never seen my mmu foundie move like you mentioned yours has, kinda creepy :| But what I do is: toner>moisturizer>monistat>fix+>mmu foundie>concealer>finishing powder. I've done before and after close ups of my face and I've yet to see the mmu movement. I also think it's highly raved cuz it's a very affordable alternative. The other high end primers are just not on normal peoples budgets :( In the states it's in TONS of stores so the price and availability of the product in this case is where majority of the rave is coming from. I do have my cons about it, but like I said that was on my first one that was due to expire soon.

LOL @ Vagi-Face! That's a new one :P

Lol...vagi-face :P

I have Photofinish and I never remember to use it. But, I think MMU goes on pretty smooth anyway. I usually apply mine wet, just little spray my kabuki with Aquafina Facial Hydrating spray.

I've been hearing alot about Monistat, but yeah...I just couldn't get over using that stuff on my face.

I have been wanting to try Fyrinnae's Rice Powder Pimer though...

And thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm linking you too :)

Tooooo funny! I got to your blog from the Muse! I have been wondering about this stuff, but I couldn't bring myself to putting it on my face. I have combo skin and use mineral make up too...have you tried Milk of Magnesia only on the T-Zone? I use that and LOVE it! It helps cut down the oil too. I put a review of it on my blog.
How's Tokyo? I used to live in Yokosuka 10 years ago (previous hubby). I LOVED living in Japan! I live in Florida now.

LOL at vagi-face!! i use my monistat "primer" on the weekends when i don't want to waste my laura geller spackle -- it's the best. :0)

(i also have smashbox's photophinish, which i love!)

p.s. thanks for your comment on my new piercing. i'm still a bit self-conscious of it, but at the same time, i really don't care if no one likes it, ya know? do you have a lot of piercings, tats? (i can't see any in your profile pic.) i have 2 tats on my right shoulder and a queen bee tat on my right arm.

Lurve: I will try ONE more time, and apply a VEEEERRRY thin layer like you said. I used it after a light moisturizer and before mmu concealer and foundation. Thank you for the insight!

Nic Nic: I have NO SHAME when it comes to stuff like this...but you can order it off drugstore.com

Gee: Applying mmu with a wet brush...I've never heard of that one...I have to try this. Thank you!

L: Giiirrrl it 'aint trickin' if you got it...I say BUY THE GOOD SHIT! (I think you're hubby would agree on this one)

Yummy411: Thank YOU for writing great reviews!

Tammy: Thank you for visiting! Monistat is worth trying at least once. I know it works wonders for some people, just not me. I have VERY confused skin...one minute it's oily, and the next, flaky...

(g)ezebel: I've heard about Laura Gellar's spackle...but there is no way I can get it here in Tokyo. I am going to search for it online..maybe they'll have in on Ulta.com? I really like your new piercing, actually. It gives your face a little more life I think. I have pics of my tats on a different post I did back in April, if you're interested ;)

lol at the vagi-face comment...

i used it a few times last year, then thought it was breaking me out so I stopped and put it away. i tried it again a few weeks ago and i think it was the cause of a few more pimples that week, so i've been thinking of just giving it away or something.
